5 Things You Should Do Post-Workout

The workout doesn’t end when you leave the gym. In fact, some of the most important aspects of a workout happen after the treadmill stops. Your post workout routine sets the tone for whether or not you’ve had a successful workout. It is imperative that you take care of your body in the gym and later on at home. The following tips will help you make the most out of your workout to maximize results.

Cool Down
Cooling down means going at a slower pace to let your body adjust and get back to normal. If running is your workout, when you are ready to stop take about five minutes to walk at a normal pace. This will allow your heart rate to come back down and help keep you from getting dizzy. It is also important to stretch after your workout. Some people swear by stretching before a workout, but stretching after a workout when your muscles have been warmed up actually helps more to prevent injuries. Stretching after a workout can also help to increase flexibility.

Have a Snack
Perhaps the most important part of a post workout routine is the post workout snack or meal. Try to eat about 30-60 minutes after you finish your workout. Eating after a workout helps repair and rebuild muscles, and helps promote results. Starving yourself or depriving yourself of food after your workout can actually be dangerous and lead to injury. Most people reach for a protein shake after their workout and that is totally acceptable, but it’s important to eat a more complex meal or snack. Try to incorporate somehealthy fatsin such as avocado spread over whole wheat toast, or an egg white omelette.

Catch Some Zzz’s
Getting a good night of sleep after a day of intense exercise helps your body to reset. It’s no secret that getting a solid 8 hours of sleep is critical for good health. Exerciseimproves the qualityof your sleep and can even help you stay asleep longer.

Take a Walk
After strenuous exercise you have to let your body rest. I’m not just talking about a good night’s sleep, I’m talking about a rest day. Make sure you incorporate rest days into your post workout routine. While you need to take days off from the gym, you shouldn’t sit on the couch and binge watch Netflix all day. Do some light exercises on your rest days such as taking a walk or doing some yoga. Doing some light exercise will help relieve your post workout soreness as well.

Relax
Actively trying to keep your stress levels down will help you get the most out of your workouts. Chronic stress can lead to health problems such as higher blood pressure or anxiety. Keeping your mind and body as healthy as possible will help you recover faster and get the most out your workout as possible.
